What to do in Madrid in San Isidro

In May, one of the most traditional and famous festivals in the whole Community of Madrid is celebrated: San Isidro. For several days people gather, flood the streets with their typical regional costumes, their chotis and enjoy the party in different parts of the capital … and much more! You can make any plan and every day will be perfect to have a great time.

Unfortunately, this year things have changed due to the crisis caused by the Covid-19, and it is impossible to live this great Madrid celebration up close, but nothing stops us from thinking about the Festivities of San Isidro 2021! In Civitatis we offer you the best plans to enjoy this celebration to the fullest next year. Do you want to know what awaits you? Here is a list!

The tradition

Going to drink the Saint’s water at the San Isidro Labrador chapel is one of the mandatory activities during these festivities in Madrid. Every year on May 15th, hundreds of people gather to stand in long queues to drink the water from the chapel, fill their bottles or even whole carafes!

This tradition is also mixed with the tradition of having a snack of doughnuts and lemonade in La Pradera de San Isidro. It will be very easy to find the stalls where you will find all kinds of offers to try the great variety of handmade doughnuts that exist: the silly ones, the smart ones, the ones from Santa Clara and the French ones.

The San Isidro Meadow

A special mention could not be missing to La Pradera de San Isidro, one of the best places to breathe the authentic atmosphere of a party. There you can walk, meet your friends or family, spend the day… Going to La Pradera is a safe bet!

The San Isidro Meadow

Every year this traditional place hosts dances, popular meals, music and children’s shows. In addition, in La Pradera you will find people of all ages, from older people who continue the tradition of going every year to children and teenagers who enjoy the party.

Furthermore, San Isidro will be the perfect occasion to taste the most typical dishes of the capital. In La Pradera you will find stands where you can get your paella dish, an omelette skewer or broken eggs with ham. If you want to taste all the gastronomic delights of the capital we recommend the tapas tour of Madrid. And of course, you cannot leave the city without trying the star dish: the cocido madrileño.

A highly recommendable option will be the Madrid cocido (stew) of the restaurant La Rayúa, where you can taste it in the best way. Although if you prefer to tour Madrid and at the same time try its delicious products, you can book the panoramic tour with tapas.

Live Music

And we cannot forget the great variety of concerts held during the San Isidro Festival. This is due to the fact that live music is one of the essential axes for the programming during these days. Moreover, the genre is very varied, the concerts range from folklore, through pop rock to electronic music.

The stages are usually located in different parts of Madrid: the Plaza Mayor, Las Vistillas, the San Isidro Meadow, the Plaza Juan Goytisolo, the Explanada Multiusos de Madrid Río, the Parque Tierno Galván, the Plaza de Oriente, the Temple of Debod, the Rosaleda del Parque del Oeste, the Retiro Park, the Templete de José Menese and the Planetarium.
