Pisa is world famous for its Leaning Tower, but it is also one of the main cities welcoming visitors to Tuscany (the other being Florence).
The idea of visiting Piazza dei Miracoli, where the Cathedral and Baptistery are also located, or using Pisa as a base for exploring Tuscany or Cinque Terre in Italy (although you can also do it on a cruise ship), meant that almost five and a half million passengers passed through Pisa Airport last year.
Pisa Airport (PSA) or Galileo Galilei International Airport is located less than 2 km from the Train Station “Pisa Centrale” and less than 3.5 km from the Tower of Pisa which makes it probably one of the closest international airports to the center of a city in the world.
In this article we will inform you of all the ways to get from Pisa Airport to the city center. After discovering Pisa, our recommendation is that you rent a car and explore Tuscany at your own pace, or do so in a well-organized way through an excursion.
By the way, Pisa Airport is a hub of Ryanair (a base) so you have flights to Pisa very frequently and from many destinations (I flew with them from Madrid on my last trip to Pisa).
If you don’t want to complicate your life, here you can book your transfer directly from Pisa airport to your hotel:
Also called “People Mover”, it works as a small unmanned and automatic train, like the one connecting the T4S terminal and the T4 at Barajas Airport in Madrid.
It replaces the conventional trains of the former Pisa Airport train station and has only two more stops apart from the Airport, San Giusto/Aurelia and the “Pisa Central” railway station.
It operates from 06:00 am to midnight, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. The journey from one end of the line to the other takes approximately 5 minutes.
The price of a ticket is 5 Eur, and if you buy it back and forth the cost is, surprise, 5 Eur.
In this video you can see how the journey is and, as a curiosity, when it was published (February 2018), the prices were much cheaper because a single ticket cost 2.70 Eur and the round trip cost 5.40 Eur.

Pisa Mover is located on the left side of Pisa airport, opposite Parking 2. In Pisa Central Station, you will find it next to platform 14 and you can access Pisa Mover from outside, from Via Quarantola.
Save on your expenses in Italy
If you are concerned about the fees your bank may charge you for a withdrawal from a cashpoint machine outside Spain, say goodbye to the fees with the Bnext card.
We have explained in detail our experience and how it works in this article but, in short, it is an international prepaid VISA card from a Spanish company that has no issuing or maintenance costs and that returns the commission charged by a cashpoint machine (in addition to applying the – more favorable – official exchange rate of VISA).
If you want to start saving, Bnext gives you 10 Eur when you make your first deposit from this link.
Bus to Pisa and other cities
If you choose the municipal/local bus option to go from Pisa Airport to the centre of Pisa, you have two official options.
One is the line E3 “Aeroporto Galilei-Pisa-S.Giuliano Terme-Ripafratta-S.Maria Giudice-Lucca”, with four stops in Pisa and ending in Lucca. The other is line E25 “Aeroporto Galilei-Pisa-Torre del Lago-Aurelia-Stazione FS-Viareggio-Lido di Camaiore-Ospedale Versilia-Pietrasanta” with two stops in Pisa and ending at Pietrasanta.
You can check here the service in real time or more details on the page of Compagnia Toscana Trasporti. The price of a Pisa city ticket is 2.50 Eur if you buy it from the driver or 1.50 Eur if you buy it in a “biglietteria”.
In addition to Lucca and Pietrasanta with CTT, Sky Bus Lines Caronna offers trips to Florence from Pisa Airport at a cost of 14 Eur.
Rent a car
Sincerely, renting a car at Pisa Airport to go to Pisa is only an option of interest if you stay a short time in Pisa, perhaps just an afternoon or a few hours, and then continue on your way to explore Tuscany or Cinque Terre.
If you have arrived at Pisa Airport and rent a car to see the essentials of Pisa and then continue your journey, I recommend you go to the centre and park for free in the “Parcheggio Via Pietrasantina”, just 10 minutes walk from the “Porta di Santa Maria” from which you access the Cathedral, the Baptistery and the Leaning Tower of Pisa.
At Pisa Airport the car rental offices are located in a separate building, with a cafeteria, next to a car park for your own vehicles. Exit the terminal, turn right and follow the signs for the “free shuttle” bus stop that takes you to them. Or you can also follow the red sidewalk (which does not line) and cover the 400 m distance.
Our advice is that it is better to rent the car online than at the Pisa Airport counter, if you want the best prices.
If you travel to Italy and want to keep your Spanish WhatsApp number, have several Gb of data to surf the Internet and a 24/7 Spanish technical support service, we recommend that you take a HolaFly data SIM card from Spain, which we talked about in this article, after testing them in several countries.
And if you buy it through our link, you get a 5% discount on its price.
The taxi service from Pisa Airport to Pisa is operated by Cooperativa Pisana Tassisti – CO.TA.PI. The taxi fare from the Airport to the Pisa Train Station is 9 Eur, and if you go to the Plaza del Duomo it is 12 Eur.
In this box, from the COTAPI website, you also have the supplements, the cost of lowering the flag, and so on.
If you travel accompanied or prefer the comfort and security of booking your trip from Pisa Airport in advance and without surprises in price, you can hire a private transportation service to your hotel.
